The course content which follows all latest guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and The Resus Council is as follows:
Unit 1

The role of the First Aider

Legislation – first aid law
-
Assessing any situation to act safely, promptly and effectively in any emergency

Unconscious casualty management including Recovery Position
-
Epilepsy and seizures
-
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for a non-breathing casualty
-
Use of an Automated External Defibrillator
-
Choking first aid for a casualty with a blocked airway
-
First aid for a casualty that has been injured and is bleeding
-
Shock (Hypovolaemic)
-
Minor injuries first aid for small cuts, grazes and bruises and small splinters
-
Minor burns and scalds
Unit 2
-
Carrying out a secondary survey
-
Fractures and soft tissue injuries
-
Suspected Head and spinal injuries
-
Chest injuries including fractured ribs and penetrating chest injury
-
Severe burns and scalds to include chemical and acid burns
-
Eye injuries including embedded objects, dust and chemicals
-
Sudden Poisoning
-
Serious bleeding including embedded objects and amputations
-
Anaphylaxis including using an adrenaline auto injector
-
Hot and Cold conditions
-
Major illnesses including: heart attack, stroke, epileptic seizure, asthma attack, diabetic hypoglycemic emergency
